It was one o’clock in the morning. Cassy and I stood side-by-side, next to Luke, who was in the hospital bed. He wore a slightly disturbed smile. The events of the evening would play on his mind for some time. But apart from the mental damage, broken arm and mild concussion, he was okay, and that was the main thing.

“You guys saved me,” he said, not for the first time that evening. “I really don’t know what I would have done without you. I don’t know how to make it up to you.”

“Don’t,” said Cassy. “You don’t need to. The fact that you’re lying here, still alive, is enough for us.”

I smiled. Felt Cassy’s hand, warm in my own.

“Okay. But – promise me – once I’m out of here – you’ll tell me what happened tonight?”

“We promise,” I said. “Though what I can’t promise is that it’s something you’ll enjoy hearing.”

Luke grimaced. “I worried that might be the case.” Then, his face lit up. “Hey! Mia!”

We turned to see a girl with raven black hair, deep brown eyes and olive skin. She seemed a little out of breath.

“Luke!” she said. “What the hell happened?”

He bit his lip. “To be honest, I don’t really know what happened. But I broke my arm, and I have a mild concussion. I think it could have been a lot worse.”

“Oh my God,” she said, striding up to him. She placed one hand in his, and brushed his hair with the other. Then, she looked to us and said, not impolitely, “Excuse me, but who are you?”

“This is Jonny and Cassy,” said Luke. “They saved me, if I’m honest.”

“Oh. Well in that case, thank you so much,” she said. “And I am so grateful to you for staying with him and looking after him. You are great friends. In fact, it’s weird that I’ve never met you before.”

“We’re new to his school,” I said. “And we only met a few days ago.”

“Oh, I see. Well, we’ll have to all meet soon and talk properly, when Luke is better.”

“That would be nice,” I said, looking to Cassy. “Well, we’d best leave you to it. We hope you feel better soon, Luke.”

“Thanks guys, for everything,” said Luke. “And I’ll speak to you in a couple of days Jonny, yeah?”

“Yeah, of course,” I said, adding another difficult conversation to my list.

Walking to the hospital entrance, where Mum would soon be arriving to pick us up – she hadn’t been happy when I’d called her just gone midnight – I was surprised when Cassy took me to one side, into a little alcove along the corridor. It was quiet, just a few night staff wandering.

“You okay?” I asked her.

“Yes,” she said. She gripped my arms firmly. “We need to talk. About earlier.”

“Earlier? What do you mean?”

“When you walked away from me and Luke at the party. You suddenly got all weird, and then you disappeared for ages. When I shouted for you, you turned up out of breath. You must have walked quite far.
