It was one oâclock in the morning. Cassy and I stood side-by-side, next to Luke, who was in the hospital bed. He wore a slightly disturbed smile. The events of the evening would play on his mind for some time. But apart from the mental damage, broken arm and mild concussion, he was okay, and that was the main thing.
âYou guys saved me,â he said, not for the first time that evening. âI really donât know what I would have done without you. I donât know how to make it up to you.â
âDonât,â said Cassy. âYou donât need to. The fact that youâre lying here, still alive, is enough for us.â
I smiled. Felt Cassyâs hand, warm in my own.
âOkay. But â promise me â once Iâm out of here â youâll tell me what happened tonight?â
âWe promise,â I said. âThough what I canât promise is that itâs something youâll enjoy hearing.â
Luke grimaced. âI worried that might be the case.â Then, his face lit up. âHey! Mia!â
We turned to see a girl with raven black hair, deep brown eyes and olive skin. She seemed a little out of breath.
âLuke!â she said. âWhat the hell happened?â
He bit his lip. âTo be honest, I donât really know what happened. But I broke my arm, and I have a mild concussion. I think it could have been a lot worse.â
âOh my God,â she said, striding up to him. She placed one hand in his, and brushed his hair with the other. Then, she looked to us and said, not impolitely, âExcuse me, but who are you?â
âThis is Jonny and Cassy,â said Luke. âThey saved me, if Iâm honest.â
âOh. Well in that case, thank you so much,â she said. âAnd I am so grateful to you for staying with him and looking after him. You are great friends. In fact, itâs weird that Iâve never met you before.â
âWeâre new to his school,â I said. âAnd we only met a few days ago.â
âOh, I see. Well, weâll have to all meet soon and talk properly, when Luke is better.â
âThat would be nice,â I said, looking to Cassy. âWell, weâd best leave you to it. We hope you feel better soon, Luke.â
âThanks guys, for everything,â said Luke. âAnd Iâll speak to you in a couple of days Jonny, yeah?â
âYeah, of course,â I said, adding another difficult conversation to my list.
Walking to the hospital entrance, where Mum would soon be arriving to pick us up â she hadnât been happy when Iâd called her just gone midnight â I was surprised when Cassy took me to one side, into a little alcove along the corridor. It was quiet, just a few night staff wandering.
âYou okay?â I asked her.
âYes,â she said. She gripped my arms firmly. âWe need to talk. About earlier.â
âEarlier? What do you mean?â
âWhen you walked away from me and Luke at the party. You suddenly got all weird, and then you disappeared for ages. When I shouted for you, you turned up out of breath. You must have walked quite far.
